Rosemary Masson’s work is semi-figurative and her constraints of choice in technique in her three chosen media require an intensity of passionate involvement, imagination and tactility which make for constant challenge and allow for extreme fluidity and strong density of form.

She paints with oils using her hands, knives or rags - never brushes as she feels they distance her from the medium. Canvas is too springy to accommodate her technique so she works on either board or panel on which she creates her own surfaces.

She draws with charcoal often spending many hours creating the surface on which she wants to work before commencing the drawing itself. These surfaces can be on various papers and even painted panel.

She sculpts in clay which is then cast - using the traditional ‘lost wax’ method - in bronze, aluminium or a clear and translucent resin, depending on the sense she wishes to convey in a particular piece.

Rosemary Masson was born in New Zealand, educated in England, spent many years living in Scotland and now lives in Suffolk, East Anglia with her husband, photographer Michael Waller-Bridge.
